Hail Damage

Unfortunately, a storm came through the area on Friday evening and produced hail, lots of wind and about an inch and a half of rain that came in a series of downpours.

This is what our corn southwest of town looks like:

Chad estimated about an eigth of the corn crop was affected by the storm. Thankfully it wasn't more. Despite the damage, the rain was probably a good thing as the temperatures look to be in the high 80s and low 90s this coming week.

Sweet Corn Crop - 2012

Summer is definitely giving way to fall around here...

School has begun, and I even saw some leaves on the ground earlier in the week.

Late August also means...

picking sweet corn!

Every year when the corn is being planted, we put in a patch of sweet corn on the edge of one of the fields.

Above is a sample of this year's bounty.

My little helper was proud of her pickings :)

And we enjoyed some with our supper last night.

Today we cooked, cut and bagged the corn to be frozen. Quite the process, but it's always great to enjoy some of that sweet corn long after the harvest has passed.

The Wheat is Complete!

Wheat harvest wrapped up the end of last week. Here are some pics from Friday:

My handy helpers delivering supper to the field.

Going for a ride with Daddy.

The wheat ran beautifully. Now a break until soybeans. The rains we got were timely in helping the soybean crop so we are hoping for good yields there as well.

Bad Day at Work

Yesterday, two spindles broke on the grain cart and you can see above what resulted. Thankfully no one was injured, and we have a replacement in the field so we can keep harvesting!

Wheat Harvest 2012

The guys are forging through wheat harvest right now. They have at least a few more days left. We got about 1.20" of rain between Thursday night and Saturday. They were able to get back out in the field again on Sunday and have been going strong since then. The moisture has been a little high and the wheat has been going into the dryer. We have been forecasted to get some thunder showers this evening and into tomorrow, but from the looks of the radar, it might just pass us by.

Rain!

We finally received a little rain today along with some cooler temps.

More rain is in the forecast for the next couple of days so hopefully we will get a little more yet.
