Annual Meeting
We held our annual meeting for Weckerly Farms yesterday at the shop.
We reviewed financial statements for each entity, observations from the past year, current changes in policies and staffing, and plans for the coming months. We were also joined by our consultant from Eide Bailly who guided us through the family business planning we began last year.
Though it is always difficult to schedule in time for meetings such as these, I think each partner gains something from the discussions. Winter is an ideal time for our annual meeting since it gets increasingly harder to get everyone together once fieldwork starts in the spring.
Speaking of spring, here is a sneak peak at the crops we'll be growing this coming season (watch for more on this in the upcoming issue of our newsletter): barley, canola, corn, wheat and soybeans. We're looking forward to a great year on the farm!

ND Feeding Families
As I mentioned in my last post, there is a petition drive going on right now to get a measure on the November 2012 ballot for a constitutional amendment to safeguard farming and ranching in North Dakota. The language of this amendment reads:
The right of farmers and ranchers to engage in modern farming and ranching practices shall be forever guaranteed in this state. No law shall be enacted which abridges the right of farmers and ranchers to employ agricultural technology, modern livestock production and ranching practices.
Here, former NDFB President Eric Aasmundstad explains the reasoning behind this amendment:

NDFB YF&R Conference 2012
After quite a hiatus following the launch of our new site and blog, I am finally putting up a new post!
This past weekend was the North Dakota Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Rancher conference held in Fargo. Young farmers and ranchers from across the state gathered to connect with each other, learn about social media and some current legislative issues facing farmers and ranchers in North Dakota.
NDFB's Public Policy Director, Sandy Clark talks about the petition drive to put a measure on the November 2012 ballot initiating a constitutional amendment safeguarding farming and ranching in North Dakota. I'll be posting more on this topic later.
We listened to speaker Michele Payn-Knoper talk about ag-advocacy ("agvocacy").
She also held a break-out session the next day where we discussed ways to reach out and educate people about agriculture.
Friday night's activities included a panel of bloggers discussing agvocacy using social media.
Chad tried his hand at roping on one of the "So You Think You Can Ranch?" teams and actually didn't do too badly!
